How Much to Spend When Adopting a Family for Christmas

A lot of people have been asking about how much to spend when they adopt a family for Christmas. The Salvation Army has an Adopt a Family for Christmas guideline of how much you should spend on a family for Christmas. In general, there is no rule so you spend as much or as little as you want on a family. Some people spend more on toys and gifts for the kids and some spend more on gift cards for Christmas meals. The Adopt a Family giving levels below from the Salvation Army gives you an idea of how much is appropriate to spend when adopting a family. Don't break your budget. You can choose the size of the family you want to adopt this Christmas.

The family size in the chart below includes one adult and all children ages 0-18. These suggested giving levels do not include gifts for the adult. For example, $45.00 is appropriate for a family of two (one adult and one child). You could spend $25 on a gift or gifts for the child and provide a $20.00 food gift card for the family-- $10.00 for each family member. When adopting a family, you can ask family members for wishlists. Everyone has a wish list of what they need for Christmas. They usually cannot afford these items throughout the year, even though they desperately need them. They wait until Christmas to ask for them. Families know that they will not get everything on their wish lists and adopters should not feel obligated to buy everything from the lists either. Pick one or two items off the lists. Families will be more than grateful to receive anything off of their lists.
